Jointly organized with the CAD, EVD and AMC
Programme Highlights
Introduction for : What is gas? Typical Application for
Enose / Gas Detector.
Hong Kong provides a conduit between the east and western
realm for integrating the use of nanotechnology
to solve problems creating business opportunity with
means to achieve profitability. Since the invention of Taguchi Gas Sensor (TGS)
in Japan (1962), very little progress has been made to integrate electronic
noses into industry. In this presentation, we discuss new breakthroughs in
electronic nose technology over the last decade which achieve breakthroughs in
specifications, performance, features and functionality. It is the impact of
applications in which makes this technology attractive as it can be miniturised
to the forefront of industry, where it stands as a new class of sensor and
detector instrument for commercial integration in the coming decade. The talk
will focus on prospective applications in food safety and quality, smart and
green infrastructure in the western markets, and big health (大健康), big agriculture(大农业)and big data (大数据)in the eastern markets.
Language
The power point and presentation will be major in English + Chinese

ReportWritten by Ms Karen Cheung
A technical seminar titled “Affirmation
of Electronic Nose and how the application in Hong Kong” was organized by the
CA Division with AMC and EV Division on 3 July 2020 at the HKIE
Headquarters. The speakers, Mr Howard Lai, and Dr Jerry Chik Wai Yu, have
revealed an unknown world of sensor technologies to us. The seminar reveals how
technology has been evolved so rapidly that unthinkable future application
might happen in the physical world.
Dr Jerry and Howard started to present
an interesting and mysterious gas detection sensor “E-Nose” to the audience, followed
by Dr Jerry’s works in developing multiple applications in matching the needs
for different industries, such as automotive market, fumigating market,
electric power market and pharmaceutical market.
Dr Jerry disclosed the challenges in
the chip-based gas sensor development to the audience, and compared several
chipset technologies - ETH Zurich 2019, SUSTC/ RMIT 2020, FIGARO and local
HKUST chipset technology. He further demonstrated his works in building
prototypes and the sensing database accumulated over the years.
Technology roadmap in sensing and data
delivering has been reviewed. Advances in sensor technology have enabled human
from distinguishing single gas components from gas mixtures, or even from time
dependent gas mixtures.
The field of the human breath content
detection has been explored during the seminar. He further explained the latest
“Olfactory Sensor Module” which could capture smell in less than 10 seconds,
and is 10 times more sensitive than usual sensor. Silicon technology and LTCC
technology have been compared in such development.
In the near future, Dr Jerry foreseen
that market growth of gas sensors could be realized in several industries,
including food & beverage, healthcare, environment, security and
agriculture. His remarkable work could let human perceive the odor without the
feeling of hunger. It could be imaged that odor data could be visualized and even
“freshness” could be derived.
The seminar had full house of
audience. The presentation by the speakers has greatly inspired the audience
that gas sensing could enable unlimited possibilities and bring great benefits
to the society. On behalf of the CA Division and Organizing Committee, we would
like to thank Mr Howard Lai and Dr Jerry Chik for their comprehensive and
inspiring presentations.
