Report Mr. David P S Chan
The technical seminar on anchor fastening design technologies was jointly organized by AMC and CAI Division held on 27 February 2012 with over 40 participants attended.
During the seminar, the speaker, Mr. Ricky Tsang, Field Engineer from HILTI (HK) Ltd. first showed members with different categories of anchors and thenbriefied us different applications of those anchors, and introduced the calculation methods used to determine an anchors performance has also been introduced. Mr. Ricky Tsang also updated us the most commonly used HILTI Anchors in Hong Kong under different applications at various projects.
For mechanical fixing components, there are 3 major anchor fixing mechanisms such as Friction anchors (HAS & HST), Keying anchors (HAD) and Bonding anchors (RE500) with different advantages. For Mechanical and Chemical anchors, both of them are suitable for use on extreme environments. Ricky explained that all HILTI anchors have been approved by the European Organization for Technical Approval – the EOTA or the ETA.
Regarding Hot dipped Galvanized / Sheradised bolts such as A2 and A4 stainless Steel bolts an anchors, the selection criteria is depending on the applications and situations based on the mentioned approach.
On the other hand, the condition of base material, compressive strength, types, effective embedment depth and layout of a group of anchors will be affecting the performance of an anchor. For example, the HST and HSL-3 anchors are likely to perform very well in Cracked Concrete subject to tension and shear load. There were existing calculation methods published by CEN named as CEN1992-4 which provides a complete set of calculation method to determine the capacity of an individual or a group of anchor bolts. The design method is in compliance with anchors data from the ETA Reports. By using this contemporary design method, the level of safety consideration can be enhanced. The CEN calculation method was programmed in the HILTI PROFITS 2 anchor calculation program and Ricky demonstrated how to use it to the audiences.
Eventually, the seminar was end with an interactive Q & A session.
