Program Highlight

CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) set up its training school in 1966 and for more than half a century has trained thousands of engineering professionals, many of whom have played key roles in Hong Kong’s development.

CLP Power upgraded its training school into a Power Academy in 2013 and established a Generation Academy to coordinate the training of both the power systems and generation employees and contractors. In October 2017, CLP Power expanded its established training network beyond its own workforce to create a new CLP Power Academy, which for the first time is providing accredited professional programmes for school leavers who are working in or aspire to a career in the power industry, providing them with an upwardly mobile career path.

The bold new educational initiative comes at the time when Hong Kong has embarked upon major infrastructure projects including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the high-speed rail link to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and the rest of mainland China. Demand for power engineering professionals is expected to grow because of the increasing need for competent professionals for the infrastructure projects and other developments such as data centres, third runway, high speed rail link, etc.

Building on the success of the Professional Diploma Programme launched late last year, CLP Power Academy is now partnering with the School of Professional Education and Executive Development of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU SPEED) to launch a part-time programme on Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering. Subject to approval from PolyU, the programme is expected to commence in September 2018.

The programme is the first top-up bachelor’s honours degree programme offered by PolyU SPEED in partnership with a public utility, and meets the accreditation standards of Qualification Framework Level 5. The content of the programme, to be integrated with academic and practical training, will help students meet with industry needs. It offers an in-depth coverage of electrical engineering, including specific knowledge of power transmission and distribution systems. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience on power equipment at CLP Power Academy and visit the power facilities or work sites of CLP Power.
