Programme Highlights:

The first Modular integrated Construction (MiC) Demonstration Project in Hong Kong was completed in Zero Carbon Building. The two-storey building was constructed using MiC approach which enabled 70% of the project to be constructed off-site at a factory in Mainland China. With the applied Digital Project Delivery Scheme, the construction time can be reduced by 30% with better quality control and construction safety.

Zero Carbon Building is developed by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) in collaboration with the Hong Kong Government to showcase the state-of-the-art eco-building design and over 80 different eco-building technologies to the construction industry, which leads to an overall reduction of 45% in energy demand compared with current building.

Report

By LEUNG Kai Chiu

A technical visit to the Construction Industry Council’s Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) Display Centre and Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) was organized by the AMC and BS Division on 23 November 2019. A total of 22 members joined the visit. Participants could understand more about MiC and ZCB through the guided tour provided by CIC.

The MiC Display Centre consists of 5 types of show flats, including a hotel unit, hostel unit, elderly home unit, a 1-bedroom residential flat and a 3-bedroom residential flat. Each usage is aimed at a different market. All of them were built by using MiC method. In this method, free-standing integrated modules (completed with finishes, fixtures and fittings) are manufactured and assembled in a factory. The modules are installed on site by crane. Each module is connected to adjacent modules and to core parts which are constructed in-situ.

By adopting MiC, the adverse impacts of weather conditions, scarce labour resources and site constraints can all be substantially reduced. Moreover, MiC provides a great degree of production quality control, and can improve construction productivity, safety and sustainability.

MiC Display Centre also displays the information of several successful MiC projects in other countries and two pilot MiC projects in Hong Kong.

Student Residence at Wong Chuk Hang, Site for the University of Hong Kong will provide 1224 hostel rooms in two 17-storey towers on top of a 3-storey podium structure.

Construction of Disciplined Services Quarters for FSD at Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O will provide 5 quarters blocks with 16 to 17 storeys. Each floor is made up of 8 units.

CIC - Zero Carbon Building (Park) is Hong Kong’s first Zero Carbon Building(Park) with different low carbon designs and technologies to inspire the construction industry to create a sustainable built environment.

The CIC-ZCP generates on-site renewable energy from photovoltaic panels and a tri-generation system using biofuel made of waste cooking oil and target to achieves zero net carbon emissions on an annual basis. CIC-ZCP also exports surplus energy (if any) to the CLP power network.

CIC-ZCB has transformed into an experiential platform that promulgates awareness in Climate Change and displays the latest Smart City technologies. There are four subordinate themes, Climate Change, Smart City and Sustainable Built Environment, Smart Living, and Health and Well-Being in whole exhibition at ZCP.
