Intelligent traffic system communication and edge computing based on blockchain

Date, time & venue

2019-12-13;18:30-20:00;Chan Yat Mei Sophie Room – 9/F

Jointly organized by ITD, AMC and CAD

Programme Highlights:

A blockchain-based communication network framework is creating a revolutionary revolution. This change includes the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic network architecture for distributed computing and storage, the next-generation blockchain network (NGBN). The core of NGBN is a new network between the physical layer and the application layer, called the Block Chain Network Layer (BNL). This network is infinitely scalable for everyone to use, while also providing an open, powerful and secure network environment for applications such as the Internet of Things, Big Data, and AI. Intelligent transportation is a good application scenario on this network. Various sensors and devices related to intelligent transportation can perform data collection and edge calculation on the blockchain network platform as needed, and share information quickly and securely.

We shall introduce the latest practical cases in how to deploy these solutions with integrated resources, namely network resources, communication resources, application and chip-level work, software and systems, and proof-of-concept testing for end-to-end deployment, etc.

By Dr. Liu Yang, the Chief Engineer of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics Department of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI)

On the evening of 13 December 2019, an informative seminar was jointly organized by

Information Technology Division (ITD), Associate Member Committee (AMC) and Control, Automation and Instrument Division (CAD) with over 80 attendees to participate this event, this seminar was presented by Dr Liu, whom is an expert with years of experience in intelligent traffic system communication and edge computing based on Block-chain.

Dr Liu firstly illustrated the key challenges from traditional network design and infrastructure, which inherited with issues on cost, complexity, as well as vulnerability. The introduction of innovative Block-chain technology will address the said issues that capable to be widely applied in various systems and applications.  He further elaborated some examples in applying Block-chain computing into different kind of applications like Smart City, including banking and financial system, cryptocurrency, public transport and communication systems, etc.

Dr Liu then further presented the technical details behind (i.e. block, hash), the relationship of data storage under Block-chain technology, and the potential application with the future  5G communication network, which supports a larger bandwidth for implementation of Block-Chain in the Artificial Intelligence of traffic system and communication system. In addition, he also illustrated the traffic system in mainland China has already been implemented via such kind of technology to analyse traffic data that benefits to public safety.

All participants were deeply influenced by the insight that was brought by the experienced speaker and they were all eager to promote the Block-chain technology in their upcoming projects. On behalf of ITD, AMC and CAD, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the speaker for his sharing and insights.
