Highlight
In Glasgow of this November
2021, the COP-26 Climate Summit is one of the biggest events of our time. The
world’s powerful economies are targeted at 2040-60 for the carbon
neutralization in order to reduce the potential threats resulted from the
extreme climate change. The publication of ISO/IEC 14064-1-2-3 helps the
international arena the methodology to be adopted for the “Validation &
Verification Body (VVB) for the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission”. This
“Standards” set out for operation on the confirmation of the trustworthy and
validity of any carbon footprint audits.
The speaker will focus based upon the global perspective on how
to conduct a proper legitimate carbon footprint audit for most of the general
organization and also mentioning some specific organizations such as steel
mills and cement plants of an economy. The objective of which is mainly used
for carbon trading in terms of green bonds and/or green finance. A universal
system is now being established to implement the accreditation of GHG VVB based
on the ISO 14065 and ISO 17029.

Report By Ir LAM Chi singA
webinar for the above mentioned seminar was conducted on 22 January 2022. This
was co-organizing with the Environmental Division, Civil Division, Associate
Members Committee and Hong Kong Institution of Certified Auditors. The speaker,
Ir CK Cheung presented the different kinds of Greenhouse Gas (GHG)
Professionals at the beginning. Five GHS professionals were available, such as
GHG Carbon Auditor, Carbon Verifier, Carbon Validator, Carbon Assessor and
Carbon Evaluator, they are managing with different industry aspects.
Greenhouse
gas (GHS) is the name from carbon, the emission of carbon would cause atmospheric
hot temperature with creating climate change.
To
combat the greenhouse emission, ISO 14064 was developed to provide a framework
for the reduction and removal of GHG emissions. Carbon auditing, carbon
trading, carbon offsetting, carbon credits, carbon accounting and footprint
were arisen as a result.
ISO14064
was a series of standards related to GHG emissions, validation and verification.
ISO 14064-1:2018 was set out for organization level of GHG emissions and
removals GHG Quantification and reporting. ISO14064-2:2019 was set out for
project level.ISO14064-3:2019 for GHG specified for validation and validation
of GHG statement were established.
Carbon
audit measures an organization or process GHG emissions including direct
emission generated on-site and indirect emission associated with energy use.
The total GHG emission will express in unit of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e)
In
Kyoto protocol, six GHG affecting atmosphere was defined, carbon dioxide,
methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbon, sulphur hexafluoride and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) Each
has its own account of global warning potential (GWP).
In
Hong Kong SAR Government and other respective environmental organizations,
carbon audit and energy saving are both concerned for measuring GHG emission.
The
carbon auditing process has included its objectives, information gathering,
site tour, information analysis, reporting and action plan with closing loop.
The ISO 5001 energy management developed was assisting in reduction of GHG
emission. In conducting GHG audit, defining the boundary of workplace is
expected. In fact, the GHG audit is quantifiable, monitoring, measurement and
control to reduce the CO2 emission. In addition, the speaker also introduced
ISO17029:2019 Conformity assessment –General Principles & Requirement for
validation & Verification bodies, and ISO 14065:2000 for General Principle
& Requirement for bodies validation and verifying environmental
Information.
The
seminar ended with question-and-answer session.
