Programme Highlights:

To cope with the rising demands due to population and economic growth, desalination is a strategic water resource that is not susceptible to the impact of climate change. WSD has been keeping abreast of the latest developments in desalination technology and actively looking for the best alternative to produce potable water in Hong Kong. Tseung Kwan O desalination plant will adopt reverse osmosis technology, and will have a water production capacity of about 135,000 cubic metres (m3) per day, with provision for future expansion to the ultimate water production capacity up to 270,000m3 per day when necessary, that will meet around 5% to 10% of the overall fresh water demand in Hong Kong. The first stage of the plant is implemented under a Design-Build-Operate contract arrangement. The contractor is responsible for the detailed design, construction and operation of the desalination plant. Construction of the first stage of Tseung Kwan O desalination plant was completed in late 2023. In this visit, a presentation on water treatment and operation will be given to the participants, followed by a guided tour to the Desalination Plant.

Guest Speaker:

Ir David Wong – Senior Resident Engineer of Binnies Hong Kong Ltd.

Ir Wong has over 20 years of experience in a wide range of waterworks projects, including Tai Po Water Treatment Works Stage 2 Expansion, Replacement and Rehabilitation of Water Mains Stage 2 and Stage 4. Since February 2020, he has been playing a key role in Resident Site Staff team in construction of the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant ensuring successful project implementation in a smart, safe and collaborative manner.
